Amseo, officially the Republic of Amseo (Jeongmian: 岩嶼民國 (암서민국), Amseo Minguk; Amseonese: Pongso no Ivato) is an east Sinju island country consisting of a small archipelago south of Bangju. With a population of over 150,000 in a territory of just a few hundred square kilometers, it is one of the smallest and most densely populated countries in the world, and is often considered a microstate.

Name[edit]

History[edit]

The Austronesian aboriginal inhabitants arrived by island-hopping from South Jungju to Tafalong and on to Amseo. Jeongmian, Meisaani, and Fusenese explorers/traders/navies soon discovered that the island was a convenient refueling stop on their way out of the East Sinju Sea, as well as a highly strategic base from which to control the Shojin straits area. Its deep natural harbor made it an exceptional port as well. As a result, Amseo was passed back and forth between various Sinju powers as their naval strength waxed and waned. The native population always played somewhat begrudging host to a large, rotating cast of foreign military and merchant personnel. Eventually, during decolonization, Amseo gained independence and is now a bit of a tourist destination. It is also increasingly leaning into its aboriginal language and identity.
